Linux is a kernel used in a wide number of Unix-like operating systems. Often, operating systems which use Linux as a kernel are simply referred to as "Linux," though strictly speaking this is a misnomer, as the operating system consists of much more than just a kernel. It is common for Linux based operating systems to be packaged as a "Linux distribution," which contains Linux, basic operating system utilities (frequently GNU), and commonly used programs.
