KDE (K Desktop Environment) is a free software project which aims to be a powerful system for an easy-to-use desktop environment. The goal of the project is to provide basic desktop functions and applications for daily needs as well as tools and documentation for developers to write stand-alone applications for the system. In this regard, the KDE project serves as an umbrella project for many standalone applications and smaller projects that are based on KDE technology.

KDE 3.5.x
- The latest stable, full-featured release
KDE 4
- A significantly redesigned desktop
- The latest release, KDE 4.1.x, while offering many new features, lacks many configuration options and features available in previous KDE releases.
- Kubuntu 8.10, released in October 2008 as the latest production release of the Kubuntu distribution, includes KDE 4.1.3 (but not KDE 3), something that has been criticized. Kubuntu users are advised not to update to Kubuntu 8.10 (and thus KDE 4.1.3) until making sure that they wouldn't miss KDE 3 features still not implemented.
